Drug-resistant roundworms lead researchers to dig deeper
Ray Kaplan, veterinarian and professor of parasitology at the University of Georgia, was recently featured in the Chemical & Engineering News magazine. The article discuss drug resistance, particularly the roundworm’s resistance in livestock world-wide. Currently a serious issue on sheep and goat farms around the world, roundworms have developed a resistance to the drug Ivermectin, an anthelmintic. These drug-resistant worms are starting to impact the cattle industry in the United States and are pushing scientists internationally to discover and synthesize new compounds in order to combat this antibiotic resistance.
